Leadership Starts at Home

I won't see you at Mega Leadership Camp, I will be at home. For the best reason: we are expecting our second child to be born any day now, and I am not missing that moment.

And I know. I know. As soon as I step on the plane, I would get the call that it's "go time and I would regret it forever. So, staying true to one of my core values of "family before business"... I won't be in Dallas, and I won't have mike's notes for Mega Leadership Camp this time. I do plan on attending Mega Agent Camp in San Antonio, so say hello when you see me!

Right now, my focus is at home.

Leadership in my mind starts at home, in our thoughts and actions. Sure we may have titles like "Dada" or "Regional MCA" or [insert name tag here]. I define "title" as short description. We attach our own meaning and identity to that title. I put more stock in my title as "Dada" than I think I ever will or have in business. So I take it on as a part of my identity.

I am a leader.

Then I thought about - well what does that actually mean to me? I decided to reflect on it and put together a list of what that means to me. I've been working on this list for a bit here, revisiting it from time to time. This is adapted from notes at past Mega Leadership Camps, Quantum Leap courses, and from so many other sources...I'd love your feedback. What do you think of the list so far?

What Leaders Do

  1. Leaders find the right people to help.

  2. Leaders think about how people feel and what they need.

  3. Leaders are around and you can talk to them easily.

  4. Leaders tell people what they know and are happy to share.

  5. Leaders have standards: rules to follow to show what is important.

  6. Leaders have a mission, a vision, and a plan that excites and empowers others.

  7. Leaders build trust to earn respect and loyalty.

  8. Leaders help people learn how to think for themselves.

  9. Leaders show people how to reach goals by taking action.

  10. Leaders foster an environment for everyone to grow.

  11. Leaders help others take action and check on progress.

  12. Leaders share ideas on how to make something better.

  13. Leaders help people work well together on teams.

  14. Leaders say "thank you" and "good job" when they see the effort and the results.

  15. Leaders help build new leaders.

  16. Leaders are readers. They never stop learning.

  17. Leaders help others discover their mission and vision.

Wishing you all a fantastic time at Mega Leadership Camp! Come back with tons of notes (and share them with me!) Your people are counting on you to lead and take action.

love, mike
